This is... awesome. I have an autistic son who can speak, but refuses to... so I will be looking into this. Odd, that no one suggested anything like this to me. I'm glad that I stumbled onto this video! Lots of help. (And the baby is just adorable!!)

Sign language develops at the same rate as spoken language if the child has the same exposure to sign language and it even follows the same patterns e.g. "babbling" one sound or action over and over. exposing your baby to both spoken and sign language will certainly not cause problems - it is basically like being bilinugal, which has been found to improve general linguistic skills. Like smarthandsca said, she's saying all the words at the same time so baby will definately not miss out!

It is a wonderful thing to know what's on your child's mind even if they can't say it yet!I used what little sign language I know with my babies and (of course I speak nonstop as well!) My eldest was saying hi verbally at 6 months (I couldn't believe it either -- I made her repeat it a LOT. She waved as well and I knew that she knew what she was doing!)My youngest made up her own signs! We are all hearing, speaking, happy & healthy!Signing is beautiful!

All the of the words she learned how to say she could sign first. Those signs she is doing she's been doing since she was 9 months old, before she could talk. When you sign you always say the word and reinforce the spoken language. It also really helped us when she started saying words but it was clear what she was saying. We would ask her for the sign and then could correct the way she said the word. Signing and talking can come hand in hand.
