Still my favorite moment in racing. It is grand when anyone can establish a station above all others (horse or man). Visited him often over in his paddock in late 70s. Still had that supreme spirit then, and would slide down the hill when Bobby called him. Absolutely magnificent.Wa Dok

Yes, he seemed miffed that Sham had the temerity to take the lead from him around a turn, which was always his particular forte. After that he seemed resolved to break Sham once and for all.

As much as I love Dr.Fager(in my opinion the greatest miler in history),he would have had no chance going against Sec at this distance,maybe at a 1 1/4 miles,but not at a 1 1/2 miles! When he got to a 1 1/4,that big heart just kept pumping vast amounts of oxygen rich blood to this freight train. Nothing anyone could have done about it,just an amazing racehorse.

When Sham pulls ahead by half a length, from Secretariat's reaction, it looks as if Secretariat says, "Oh, really, is THAT what you think? Ok, then, how do you like this?" And Sham is a lightning bolt race horse which is what makes this SO AMAZING in a mile & 1/2 race!!! |
