Social Media: Where to start?
A short translation of an article by Chris Brogan " ".
That's what I'm going to do. I'm going to build three different behavioral strategies in social media and provide a starting point to understand what can be done using these strategies. Try to extrapolate them to your profession or your needs.
First of all. Listen.
In listening - is the base, the very first step that is necessary to understand the essence of social networks. This means: go and read the blogs presented on social networks. Visit twitter.com and, more importantly, search.twitter.com and see what people are saying. Read comments on blogs and see what entries are causing the most comment. Please use the Blog Search Google (or Yandex), look at the most discussed topics.
And then start yourself.
The first platform: a blog
Elements of social media network is a blog. Blog - a website with lots of built-in features that make it useful in terms of search, and simple in terms of content creation.
Do not worry about the features, but some blogging platform suitable for more complex things than just publishing content, a simple default blog - this will be enough.
Now let's consider three possible scenarios.
Personal branding: I would have bought your own domain name and posted it on low-cost quality hosting with good support.
PR company, I would use off-brand domain is a strong way, such as Digital Nomads (Digital Nomads) for the company Dell. The reason for this: it does not do "product blog" or "corporate voice" of the company, rather, I would have made a blog that is useful for people. Exceptions: do large corporations with many bloggers, like SUN, IBM, Cisco, etc.
Nonprofit Blog: A blog with stories from life or photographs of the cases in the resolution of which I beg to support. Stories and pictures - the strong factors that arouse interest in the non-profit events.
Second step: Outposts
In all cases, I would have built outposts, by which I can achieve great things in different places and communicate with people wherever they are. Depending on your needs, I would use different instruments. At least, you should start with:
- linkedin (Moikrug)
- facebook (Vkontakte)
How does it work for our three examples:
Personal branding: use twitter to build relationships and share experiences. Use facebook (Vkontakte), to learn about groups and events of interest. Keep your profile on Moikrug active and urgent, fill it to the maximum. Purpose: To keep your name out there, far ahead of when you might need something from someone.
Company: use twitter, to show that you - the people. For example, Dell representatives draw up their accounts to tweet something like this: RichardATDell. Use OpenID, or accounts in my circle as individual accounts, but to find a similar group. You can participate in other people's groups. You can find friends with similar interests. Be men. This is the main rule.
Noncommercial: You can make an account on Twitter as your name and the name of reason - non-profit event. In social networks - to act as individuals, but form a group around your needs and invite these groups of people who can become your supporters.
The behavior in each social network will be different. One note: do not use the same tools to promote your status on all platforms. Clearly, this is an easier way, but it also means your disrespect for specific audiences at the outposts.
In all cases, do not use an avatar logo. Only the picture. Try to get a natural shot, no extremes (professional pictures or cut group picture)
In all cases: a completed profile means that you are not just a business person, but a man. Do not hesitate to share their professional aspirations, and interests. Make sure that your status messages do not always say about your business, otherwise people will not stay with you.

My advice: stay away from social services. networks, they usually are a base for espionage.
